Description

In 2011, archaeologists discovered the world’s oldest known winery dating back 6,000 years in the Areni-1 Cave near Areni village. Armenian winemakers today are reinvigorating Armenia’s wine sector, using many indigenous varieties. Celebrated since 2009, each October Armenian winemakers and tens of thousands of visitors gather in Areni village to celebrate the harvest and Armenia’s winemaking heritage during the annual Areni Wine Festival.

The festival hosts a variety of local wines. The opening ceremony begins with a parade of winemakers, followed by different competitions, songs and dances, and throughout the festival, regional artisans and local residents display handmade products and beverages.
