Aidil Adha commemorates the Koranic teaching about the readiness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ishmael on Mount Moriah. According to Islam, Ibrahim bound and nearly sacrificed Ishmael. Muslims celebrate Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice everything in order to obey Allah.
Many Muslims will go on pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia during Aidil Adha and take part in numerous rituals including the sacrifice of an animal there to remember Ibrahim’s sacrifice of a sheep in Ishmael’s place. For Muslims in Brunei, this holiday is spent attending prayer sessions and sermons at the local mosque, giving food or other forms of charity to the poor, and sacrificing, sharing and eating a cow or other healthy livestock animal if they can afford it.
