Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday is a public holiday in Iraq, and is officially celebrated on the traditional Sunni date of 12 Rabi al-Awwal on the Islamic calendar.
However Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday actually occurs on different dates for the Shia majority versus the Sunni minority here. For Shias, Muhammad was born on the seventeenth day of the third Islamic month (Rabi al-Awwal), while according to Sunni calculations, his birthday falls on the twelfth day of that same month.
People in Baghdad and other major cities during Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday will be immediately struck by the dazzling lights displays adorning buildings and lining public streets. The most elaborate displays are truly amazing when seen at night.
There will be processions in some quarters on Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday.
