About Gnaoua
Each June the whitewashed port of Essaouira on Morocco's Atlantic coast hosts the Gnaoua World Music Festival, a joyous, largely free celebration of the hypnotic, trance-inducing music of the Gnaoua brotherhoods. The city's ramparts and squares become stages where Gnaoua maΓ’lems jam with jazz, blues and world musicians late into the salt-air night. It is a rare festival that is at once a spiritual heritage event and a wildly fun street party. Essaouira's medina, seafood and windswept beaches make it a joy to linger.
“Hypnotic, joyous and mostly free β trance music spilling through a whitewashed port town.”
