The Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival in China's far north-east is the largest of its kind on earth, building an entire glittering city of palaces, towers and slides from blocks of Songhua River ice, lit from within in every colour after dark. Temperatures routinely plunge far below freezing, which is precisely what keeps the frozen metropolis standing through the winter.
