Diwali

About Diwali

Diwali, the festival of lights, is the most important celebration in the Hindu calendar and is marked over five days each autumn across India and the wider diaspora. Homes and streets are lined with oil lamps and candles, fireworks fill the sky, families exchange sweets and gifts, and the goddess Lakshmi is welcomed for prosperity in the year ahead. It symbolises the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. The scale — whole cities glowing at once — makes it one of the most beautiful sights in the world.
