About Songkran
Songkran, the Thai New Year in mid-April, is famous worldwide as the biggest water fight on earth — but beneath the soaking is a gentle tradition of washing away the past year's misfortune and honouring elders by pouring water over their hands. For a few days whole cities, Chiang Mai above all, become good-natured battlegrounds of buckets, hoses and water pistols in the tropical heat. It is joyful, egalitarian and utterly drenching.
