About Nyepi
Nyepi is the Balinese 'Day of Silence' marking the Hindu new year in March, when the entire island shuts down for 24 hours: no lights, no travel, no work, no noise, even the airport closes, as the island turns inward for reflection. The night before is its riotous opposite — the Ngrupuk parade, when villages carry towering, grotesque ogoh-ogoh demon effigies through the streets before burning them to drive out evil spirits. Together the two days form one of the most striking cultural experiences in Asia. Visitors are expected to stay in their accommodation and observe the silence.
