Timkat

🇪🇹 Gondar, Ethiopia

About Timkat

Timkat is the Ethiopian Orthodox celebration of Epiphany in January, commemorating the baptism of Christ with one of the most spectacular religious festivals in Africa. Replicas of the Ark of the Covenant are carried in procession beneath ceremonial umbrellas, priests in brilliant robes chant and dance, and crowds in white gather for a mass renewal of baptismal vows in blessed water. The celebrations in Gondar, around its historic castle pools, are the most famous. It is a profound, colour-saturated immersion in one of the world's oldest Christian traditions.
