About Yi Peng
Yi Peng is the northern Thai lantern festival, most famous for the moment thousands of glowing paper lanterns are released together into the November night sky over Chiang Mai, symbolising the letting-go of misfortune and the making of merit. Held around the same time as the water-borne Loy Krathong, it fills the old city with candlelight, temples and quiet ceremony as well as spectacle. The mass lantern releases are breathtaking but increasingly ticketed and regulated for safety. It is one of the most photographed and genuinely moving sights in Asia.
