About Battle of the Oranges
The Battle of the Oranges is the centrepiece of the Carnival of Ivrea in northern Italy, when the town divides into nine teams on foot who pelt 'aristocrats' riding in carts with tens of thousands of kilos of oranges, reenacting a medieval uprising against a tyrannical lord. For three days in February the streets run with citrus pulp in one of Italy's most spectacular and combative traditions. Spectators who wear a red cap are declared neutral and, in theory, spared. Wear old clothes, expect bruises, and never underestimate a flying orange.
