About Wife Carrying
The Wife Carrying World Championships in the Finnish town of Sonkajärvi each July send male competitors racing through an obstacle course — over hurdles and through a water pool — while carrying a female partner, typically upside-down in the acrobatic 'Estonian carry'. The prize is famously the wife's weight in beer. Rooted tongue-in-cheek in local legend, it has spawned qualifying events around the world. It is affectionate, absurd and hugely entertaining to watch. No, she does not have to be your actual wife.
“Affectionate, absurd and hugely entertaining. Yes, the prize really is the wife's weight in beer.”
