About El Colacho
El Colacho, the baby-jumping festival of Castrillo de Murcia in northern Spain, dates back to 1620 and sees men dressed as the Devil leap over rows of babies born in the previous year, who are laid on mattresses in the street, to cleanse them of original sin. It is one of the strangest and most photographed traditions in the Catholic world, held around the feast of Corpus Christi in June. The village takes it entirely seriously as a matter of faith and heritage. Extraordinary, unsettling and unlike anything else on the calendar.
