About Cheese Rolling
On the steep, treacherous slope of Cooper's Hill in Gloucestershire each spring, competitors hurl themselves after a nine-pound wheel of Double Gloucester cheese, which reaches speeds that make catching it essentially impossible — so the first person to the bottom wins it instead. Injuries are common, ambulances are on standby, and the whole gloriously daft tradition is centuries old. Thousands gather to watch bodies tumble down the near-vertical hill. Watching is decidedly safer than competing, but the spectacle is pure, absurd English tradition.
