Monkey Buffet

🇹🇭 Lopburi, Thailand

About Monkey Buffet

Each November the town of Lopburi in central Thailand lays on an enormous feast — tables piled with fruit, vegetables and sweets — for the thousands of macaque monkeys that roam its ancient Khmer temples, in thanks for the tourism the mischievous animals bring. The monkeys, unsurprisingly, descend in a chaotic, gleeful free-for-all. It is a delightfully bizarre spectacle, complete with costumed performers and a genuine festival atmosphere. Keep a tight hold of your sunglasses, phone and snacks — the locals are notorious thieves.
